This film may be a little less focused than Scorsese’s other Mafia movies like “Mean Streets” and “Goodfellas,” but it does a great job of showing the nitty gritty underbelly of Las Vegas and how the city swallowed up and spit out the mob and its members. Robert De Niro is once again outstanding as gangster Ace Rothstein, and Sharon Stone shines as the blonde hustler Ginger McKenna. Joe Pesci’s Santoro is an excellent addition to the cast, and his dynamic with the more refined Sam Rothstein is a real treat to watch. This plotline is perhaps the best-built scumbag storyline in a movie ever, and it’s built into the movie so subtly that you’re never sure where it’s going to go.
